BELIEVE IN ME AWARDS 2007
The Who Cares? Trust announced the second Believe in Me Awards ceremony for adults working with children and young people in care. The awards were held in conjunction with the Trust’s 15th birthday and took place on 12 July 2007 at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, London.
The ceremony was attended by celebrities Melinda Messenger, Amanda Mealing, Luisa Bradshaw-White and Dr Tanya Byron, while BBC’s Emily Maitlis presented the awards ceremony. There was entertainment from Bollywood dancers The Flash Angels, Magician Christopher Howell and singer/guitarist Jack Savoretti.
The awards reflect how adults working in the care system or who come into contact with children and young people in the care system can have a positive impact on a young person’s life, by supporting and encouraging their talents and interests.
The awards were open solely for children and young people to nominate a carer, relative or professional who has made an impact and helped to improve their life.
Over 38,500 nomination forms were sent out to children and young people throughout England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, via the Trust’s own magazines; Who Cares? (aimed at 13-18 year olds) and KLIC! (aimed at 8-12 year olds).
The closing date for nominations was 5 April 2007. We would like to say a big thank you to all the young people who sent in a nomination. We received over 700 nomination forms. Although there were only 20 overall winners, everyone will receive a certificate to pass on to the adult they nominated so they know how much they are appreciated.
Here are some comments from those who attended on the day:

We would like to say a special ‘Thank You’ to the sponsors of the Believe in Me Awards 2007:
SCIE – Social Care Institute for Excellence:
"The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) aims to improve social care services for children and adults in the United Kingdom. We achieve this by identifying, advancing and promoting good practice and producing guidance for everyone with an interest in social care. For more information visit: www.scie.org.uk.
SCIE’s work with care-experienced young people has highlighted some remarkable and creative achievements. Adults who work with children and young people in care can make an extraordinary difference to their lives that should be celebrated and shared. The Believe in Me Awards recognise good practice that is identified by the real experts – the children and young people from care. SCIE is delighted to support the Believe in Me Awards 2007."
"These awards send a message to individual children in care that their views are extremely important, and that influential people in their lives are worthy of an award. The spectacular ceremony will come to the attention of other young people and will alert those, who have not previously considered children in care, of the particular difficulties they face."
