BIKING FOR CHILDREN IN CARE '06
2006's bike ride had a truly continental feel. Taking place in Holland, the cyclists covered more than 200 miles over three days from the Hook of Holland to Amsterdam.
The cyclists, led once again by the dynamic Gill Timmis, left London on the 29 June to catch the ferry to the Hook of Holland, cycled through Southern Holland staying at Vlaardingen; Middelburg; Dordrecht and ended up at their final destination, Amsterdam, on 3 July.
Over 50 cyclists took part in last year’s grueling ride, backed up by a fantastic support team who provided them with much needed breaks in the soaring temperatures. The cyclists and everyone at The Who Cares? Trust are very grateful to everyone who helped and supported them on their ride, including Fiat, Citroen, Volkswagen and Iveco for their vehicle loans and to P&O for their generosity in allowing the cyclists, and all their bikes, cross to Holland free of charge.
Contributions such as these enabled the cyclists to keep their overheads down and allows every penny of the money they make to go to where it matters: the 60,000 children and young people in the UK who are separated from their families and living with foster carers or in residential homes.
The cyclists hope to match 2005’s fantastic amount of over £30,000, which this year will contribute towards the development and publication of Who Cares? about Health and Who Cares? about Drugs. These booklets are currently being updated, re-edited and re-designed for children in care.
Over the years, the Trust has been concerned about the poor health outcomes of children in care and it was with this in mind that we published the original editions. These publications have proved to be very well received by young people, carers and professionals, in providing accessible and informative health information.
As the information and the design needed to be updated and we have run out of stock of both these popular publications it seems very fitting that money from Biking for Children in Care should go towards something which clearly emphasises the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
