Gill Timmis of Biking for children in care

CYCLING ACROSS THE LAND

We and Gill went up the hill,
To fetch our sponsor money,
All went down through mud and stiles,
Tumbling into the sea.

A. Hampson, a participant of BCIC 2007

The 2007 Biking for Children in Care was once again met with tremendous success and, this year, with a fair amount of rain.

Gill Timmis and her team of cyclists left London for Southport on the eve of the severe floods felt almost everywhere across the country at the end of June. Last minute changes had to be made to the original route, but that didn’t stop this incredible team from cycling across the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) as originally planned.

The cyclists hit the road early in the morning of 29th of June. Three days later, they had cycled 210 miles across mud, water and rocks, never once losing their sense of humor or camaraderie.

The money raised for this year was used to support the 2nd edition of the Believe in Me Awards, which took place on the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London, on the 12th of July. It gives us great pleasure at the Trust to announce that the fundraising efforts of the Biking for Children in Care team were well rewarded, and so far they have raised over £40,000.

The Who Cares? Trust would like to thank all of those involved in the preparation of the event, the cyclists who faced the rain and kept pedaling, those who lent a hand all the way through, be it helping with a punctured wheel or making a cup of tea, and finally, each and every donor who gave generously.

Last but not least, Iveco kindly lent us a lorry to firstly transport the bikes to Southport and then the luggage while the cyclists peddled across the Trail. Land Rover provided a Discovery to be used as the Emergency Response Vehicle, while Volkswagen was at hand with a van to carry food and supplies. GlaxoSmithKlein was also kind enough to match the amount four of its members participating in the ride raised last year. From all of us at the Trust: Thank you!
