New publication for young people in care about post-16 opportunities

27 January 2012

A must-have for all young people in care, Finding Your Way is a practical and easy-to-use guide to post-16 opportunities in education and training.

Being in care should never hold young people back from realising their ambitions. Finding Your Way gives supportive advice about gaining further qualifications, skills or work experience, so that young people can make the best choice for them. It also sets out information about rights and entitlement and offers additional sources of advice.

“It’s important to remember that there’s no set route into education – and you don’t have to have all of the answers right now. As a care leaver, you could still be entitled to support until you turn 25. Lots of people make the decision to go back to education at all times of life and for all sorts of reasons. Whatever your journey has been, there’s always a way to get back into education.” (from Finding Your Way)

Inside the publication:

We worked with a steering group of young people from care to ensure the guide is accessible and engaging. Here’s what one of them said:

“I wish I’d had something like this when I was deciding what to do after school. I’m really proud of what we’ve produced and I think it will help lots of young people from care realise they can achieve.” (Min, 20)

The 64-page guide is divided into five sections:

  • School
  • College and sixth form
  • Apprenticeships
  • University
  • Time out from learning

Each section contains information about the types of qualifications available, choosing what and where to study, entry requirements, getting part-time work, and young people’s entitlements.

The guide is based on the latest Government guidance and includes details of new arrangements for student finance – including the 16-19 bursary and higher tuition fees.
