Looked after children have appealed to Moria Gibb, Chair of the Social Work Taskforce, for more involvement in the training and recruitment of social workers.
Voicing their views at the latest Associate Parliamentary Group for Looked after Children and Care Leavers, young people suggested that having a greater say in the profession could create vast improvements.
Young people in and from care also got the chance to express their frustrations at having their social worker frequently changed, and applauded when it was suggested that children should be taken to visit trainee social workers.
A care leaver who is now training to be a social worker commented: ‘What I have been taught does not reflect the everyday experiences of social workers. The result is people are coming out of university clueless about what actually goes on.’
Gibb reassured young people that the Social Work Taskforce had spoken to young people, stating "We have tried very hard to be out there listening to people and we never get through an hour without talking about service users, I will take on board what has been said."
