Children's charity Shaftesbury Young People has warned that children in care are disadvantaged by the current education system and that bursaries could drastically improve their educational outcomes.
Sarah Gentles, education manager at Shaftesbury Young People said "For children in mainstream education provision, they could spend the bursary on one-to-one support. For those who have special educational needs (SEN), money would provide additional services".
She went on to state that looked-after children with special educational needs are at a particular disadvantage. "Middle-class parents will fight tooth and nail to get their child a statement, but there is a lack of advocacy for looked-after children with SEN," she explained. "The personal education allowance is not enough and not everyone gets it."
