John blogs about his first social worker

26 May 2010

In his fourth post, 'Thanks Helen', our blogger John talks about the difference that his first social worker made to his life and reflects upon what makes a 'good' social worker.

"My mother was so broken back then and it was Helen who often picked her up and put her back together. She was always there. She tried her best with us and the chasm she crossed to try to communicate with me and my brother would make the Grand Canyon look like a small crack in the ground. We were from different sides of the tracks, but she was always reaching over. It was easy to look down on me and my family and stuff us in a stereotype, but I don’t think she did and I always felt warmth and respect for her." (excerpt from 'Thanks Helen')

John is a careleaver with a lot to say about his experiences of the system. He has been blogging for The Who Cares? Trust since the start of 2010. His eloquently expressed posts are, although sometimes brutally honest about the shortcomings of the care system, an uplifting and inspirational read for anyone and everyone in the sector - particuarly young people currently in care.
