An investigation led by Community Care has revealed that one in 10 social work posts are vacant, despite the millions of pounds that have been invested by the government to reform the profession and boost recruitment.
According to the Freedom of Information investigation, vacancy rates have actually increased from 10.9% in 2009 to 11.3% in 2010. As a result the pressure on existing social work teams has grown with fears that services are suffering.
The rise in vacancies has been blamed on the negative public perception of social work as well as the low morale of staff, large caseloads and spending cuts.
