Helping children in care to thrive

Young peoples' experiences

For a number of care leavers, Building Futures had significant outcomes. Many young people who took part felt that the placements really improved their sense of self-esteem and their overall level of confidence. Growth in the young people’s confidence throughout the placement was also something that was commented on by professionals.

Watch and read about how getting work experience inspired confidence and helped to turn around these young people's lives:

 Dan

Dan's story

“It really helped my confidence. It showed me I could actually work. I could enter an office and do well. I’d not had that kind of chance before, it helped me think differently about myself.”

 Sharon

Sharon's story

“If I hadn’t been on the work experience, my day wouldn’t have any structure to it, I’d have spent my time being lazy. Getting up at stupid o’clock, watching TV, being a bum. That’s not who I am, I want to get up and do something useful."

 Sian

Sian's story

“Doing the work experience changed my life. It gave me more confidence and made me think more of myself. I made me get up and have a routine. I enjoyed it all.”

 Jamie

Jamie's story

“One of the strangest things about going to work was that somehow people noticed me more. That change in people’s reactions made me feel important and proud. It made me feel strong again.”
