Independent visitors

Independent Visitors (IVs) are totally separate from social services and are there to act as a friend. They meet up with you, do whatever activities you choose and listen if you want to talk.

Know your rights

The Children Act means every child in care should have access to an Independent Visitor. If you’re interested, speak to your carer, key worker or social worker. If you can’t speak to any of these people, mention it to your Independent Reviewing Officer at your review.

The facts

  • IVs are available – by law – to all children in care.
  • IVs are totally independent from social services.
  • IVs will not report anything you talk about, unless they think you’re in danger.
  • IVs are there to visit you, to be friends with you and to advise you.
  • IVs can share hobbies with you, help with homework, or just hang out with you.
  • IVs can be with you during your review.
  • IVs stay with you even if you move placements, unless you’re moved out of authority.
  • IVs remain with you until you leave care.
