The APPG in Parliament

The views expressed at the APPG find their way into the heart of British politics.

The following summarises the mentions of looked-after children in Parliament by Officers of the APPG:

  • 18 October 2010 – Edward Timpson asked the Secretary of State about the Pupil Premium and whether looked-after children would benefit.
  • 28 October 2010 – The Earl of Listowel spoke of the needs of children in care in a debate on raising educational performance.
  • 24 November 2010 – In a debate about the Schools White Paper Edward Timpson asked the Secretary of State about support for looked-after children and care leavers.
  • 29 November 2010 – In a debate on legal aid, the Earl of Listowel asked for the government to do more to support early help for families to avoid children needing to enter the care system.
  • 7 December 2010 – The Earl of Listowel spoke in a debate on the child trust fund for children leaving care.
  • 19 January 2011 – The Earl of Listowel wrote to the Government asking about the number of placement moves for children in care.
  • 10 February 2011 – Edward Timpson led an adjournment debate on children in care.
  • 28 February 2011 – The Earl of Listowel asked the Government to make savings accounts for children in care statutory.
  • 7 March 2011 – The Earl of Listowel asked the Government about support for children in care in the EMA replacement scheme.
  • 8 March 2011 – The Earl of Listowel asked the Government what support was in place for children in care who become parents.
  • 22 March 2011 – In a debate on savings schemes for looked-after children, Edward Timpson informed the Chancellor of the Exchequer that the scheme had widespread support.
  • 28 March 2011 – During a debate on the replacement for the Education Maintenance Allowance, Edward Timpson asked the Secretary of State to consider widening the scope of the ButtleUK quality mark.
  • 5 April 2011 – Lisa Nandy wrote to Minister of State (Schools ) asking for information on care leavers with special education needs entitlement to 16-19 education fund support.
  • 17 May 2011 - Edward Timpson wrote to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children asking for the number of young people who have been in foster care who have completed an undergraduate course.
  • 17 May 2011 – Edward Timpson wrote to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children asking what steps the Government is taking to support adoption.
  • 17 May 2011 - Edward Timpson wrote to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children asking how many young people who had been in local authority foster care in each (a) parliamentary constituency and (b) local authority enrolled in an undergraduate course in each of the last five years.
  • 23 May 2011 – The Earl of Listowel asked the Government how they are meeting the mental health needs of children in the care of local authorities.
  • 24 May 2011 - Edward Timpson wrote to the Secretary of State for Education to ask: 1) whether he has had discussions with the Chancellor of the Exchequer on financial support for the continuation and extension of the Frank Buttle Trust quality mark for higher and further education institutions; 2) whether his Department has plans to support the continuation and extension of the Frank Buttle Trust quality mark for higher and further education institutions.
  • 12 July 2011 - Edward Timpson wrote to the Secretary of State for Education to ask what proportion of (a) looked after children and (b) other children achieved the expected standard in English and mathematics at key stage 2 in (i) 1997 and (ii) 2010.
  • 13 July 2011 - Edward Timpson wrote to the Secretary of State for Education to ask what proportion of (a) looked after children and (b) other children gained five GCSEs or equivalents at grades A* to C in (i) 1997 and (ii) 2010; and how many of those included GCSEs or equivalents in English and mathematics.
