On 21 July 2011 a select group of children in care, care leavers and foster carers met Michael Gove at a reception hosted by Edward Timpson on behalf of the APPGs for Looked After Children and Care Leavers and Fostering and Adoption.
Over a hundred people came along to the House of Commons terrace to listen to speeches from Edward, Michael Gove and Aicha Camara.
In his speech, Edward thanked all of the people who had attended the APPG in the last year. In particular, he thought that the number of young people who came along was unique and made our APPG something special.
Aicha Camara said that participating in the APPG was really important for young people in care as it gave them a voice. She thought that it was important that children in care knew that they could do anything and should have high expectations.
Michael Gove spoke about the changes that the Government has made over the past year, including a new foster carers charter, a promise of a savings account for all looked-after children, a new pupil premium for looked-after children and ensuring that the bursary for 16-19 went to looked after children and care leavers.
He also spoke about his own personal experience of being adopted and how this had made him passionate to change the care system. He called on the attendees at the APPG to keep on holding the Government to account and tell them when they aren’t doing well enough.
It was a great event that showed how well supported the APPG is and how seriously it is taken.
