Would I suit it?

Most accountants have a degree but it is possible to become an accountant with GCSEs and two A Levels. The following courses are also really useful at giving you some accounting skills:

  • The Diploma in business, administration and finance
  • City & Guilds Levels 1, 2 and 3 in book-keeping and accounts
  • City & Guilds Levels 1, 2, and 3 in business finance
  • Level 3 in Accounting and Advanced Book-keeping
  • IAB Level 3 in Cost and Management Accounting
  • EDI Level 3 Certificate in accounting (IAS)
  • OCR Level 2 and 3 Certificate and Diploma in accounting.

If you want to be an accountant but don’t want to go to university, you will have to study for the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or Chartered Accounting Technician (CAT) qualifications whilst working.

Have a look at some local accountancy firms as well as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) to see if any training vacancies are advertised.

Are you...

  • Comfortable working with numbers?
  • Confident using a computer?
  • Honest and trustworthy when working with confidential information?
  • Interested in business and finance?

If so, then accounting could really suit you!

If you think you would like to be an accountant, you need to be completely committed to getting through the first three or four years of training and all the exams you will have to sit as it can be tough. You will need to work hard and be aware that accountants usually work their way up.

Career Prospects

  • Most accountants start out on between £17,000 and £23,000.
  • When you become qualified this would increase to between £27,000 and £45,000.
  • A successful accountant can earn up to £100,000 and a senior partner in a large firm can earn up to £150,000 a year.

To qualify as a professional accountant, you would need to pass the professional exams and complete training whilst working.

A qualified accountant might be able to work abroad or specialise in an area of accounting such as audit or risk management.

Once you’ve had lots of experience you could even set up your own practice.
