How to prepare

Interviews can feel quite daunting, but you'd be surprised how much difference a bit of preparation can make. Spend some time researching the organisation and planning your route. It will make you feel more confident and relaxed on the day - and that's half the battle!

Top tips for preparing for interviews:

1.  Research the organisation as well as the opportunity - look at the company's website and read of all the information that they sent you. You'd be surprised about how much you can find out from Google! Think about some of the following questions:

  • What is the size of the organisation?
  • How does the organisation describe itself?
  • How long has it been in business?
  • What are its products and/or services?
  • What sort of reputation or public image does it have?
  • Who are its main competitors?
  • Where is it based? Single or multiple locations?
  • What are its future plans?

2.  Plan what to take with you to the interview - did they ask you to bring anything along? Make sure that you take a few essentials:

  • Pen and paper
  • Some money for your bus fare or lunch
  • Directions so you don't get lost. If you've never been there before print out a map - try using Streetmap
  • Contact details of someone at the organisation in case you do get delayed.

3. Think about what you're going to wear for the interview - depending on what sort of job it is, you might not need to wear a suit. But make sure that you make a special effort to look smart - wear clean and ironed clothes and don't put on too much make up or jewellery.

4.  Find out what the interview involves - the more you know in advance, the less nervous you will feel on the day. Make sure that you read everything that they sent you in detail.

  • Do you know how many people are interviewing you?
  • Does the interview include any tests or assessments?
  • Do you have to give a presentation?

5. Think about what questions they might ask you and how you could reply. Share your ideas with your friends, family and other people who know you well.

6. Make a list of questions to ask them.
