Civil servant

What is a civil servant?

A civil servant works in the government to help deliver its policies and services to the public.

There are lots of different areas to work in such as health and education so you should be able to find something that particularly interests you.

What sorts of things would I be doing?

It depends on the role. You could be working in a minister’s private office or your local council. You could be involved in human resources, marketing, social justice or even international relations.

What qualifications would I need?

It depends on what job you are applying for. Lots of roles do not ask for any formal qualifications as they judge applicants against the skills and experience needed for the job.

The Diploma in public service however would provide a possible route into a range of careers in the public sector, including central and local government.

If you decide to go to university, graduates with at least a 2.2 honours degree in any subject may apply to the Civil Service Fast Stream.

Would it suit me?

Are you interested in politics and the way government works? Can you be discreet when working with confidential information? If so, working for the civil service might really suit you.

Career Prospects

There are lots of opportunities for promotion in the civil service if you prove that you are committed and hard working.
