Eastenders: E20

The cast from series three!

The square cares! And that's cos the scriptwriters care too... Series three is all about children in care as it's actually based on one of the scriptwriter's childhood experiences.

What some care kids go through has now been brought into the world of TV and into everyone's living rooms, where everyone can sit up and take notice.

Who Cares? chats to the cast who play Samuell, Ava, Donnie, Faith and Richard the social worker…

E20 Samuell

What's your name? Samuell Benta.

Date of birth?

August 29, 1986.

Who do you play? Donnie.

How would you describe Donnie?

Aggressive, caring, loving, dangerous.

Donnie's separated from his sister who's also in care. What would you say to promote becoming carers to people?

Well, it’s a major responsibility, but there are so many kids out there who are in need of help and support.

I think more people should really consider becoming a foster carer, it's essentially changing someone's life for the better!

After playing a character centred on the care system what do you think about it?

I think more attention should be given to kids in care.

I never knew such situations could be possible in care homes; reading the scripts for E20 opened my eyes to a lot of silent suffering that kids could be going through.

E20 Faith

What's your name? Modupe Adeyeye.

Who do you play? Faith.

How would you describe Faith?

Confident, cheeky, vulnerable, rude.

How did Faith end up in care when her grandma and sister are ok?

Faith was sent to a boarding school in Nigeria by her grandma for bad behaviour and when she finally returned to the UK she acted out, wanting to punish her grandma for neglecting her.

Faith tried to get her grandma back by throwing parties, sleeping around and trashing her grandma's house. Faith's grandma couldn't handle her erratic behaviour and threw her out.

Faith then ended up in a care home where she met Donnie and Ava.

What did you know about care before  E20?

I had a couple of friends who had been in care and visited them regularly.

From what I saw, I knew living in care wasn't easy, so many things happen that people don’t know about.

A lot of those young people struggled to live comfortably and didn’t really trust the environment they were in.

What do you think of care now?

There are many care workers who are wonderful at what they do and really dedicated to helping young people.

But I know that not everyone's experience of care is the same, and some care workers abuse their power.

E20 Sam

What's your name? Sam Philips.

Who do you play? Richard the social worker!

How would you describe Richard?

Vain, dreamer, lascivious, condescending.

What did you think of care kids before E20?

I presumed most kids in care would be hard work because of their upbringing.

What do you think of care kids now?

That they'd hate me for generalising before!

All kids are just looking for ways to express themselves and they all need guidance - regardless of their upbringing.

What did you think of the care system before E20?

I always considered social care a necessity to help disadvantaged people.

What do you think of the care system now?

I now have a clearer picture of how much responsibility each social worker has and just how hard they work.

How hard do you think it would be to be a social worker in real life?

I imagine it's one of the most challenging professions in this country and I have the admiration for anyone doing it.

E20 Ava

What's your name? Sophie Colquhoun.

Who do you play? Ava.

How would you describe Ava?

Closed, untrusting, defensive, determined.

How did a posh girl like Ava end up in care?

Ava's never known her father and she was too much for her busy mother to handle, or be bothered with.

After getting into trouble at the age of 12, she spent time in juevie and was given up on by her mother and abandoned into the arms of the care system.

Passed from care home to care home, she’s been in the system over five years and knows it only too well. She quickly learnt to hide who she really was, keep her cards close to her chest and do whatever was required simply to blend in and not stand out as 'the posh girl'.

One thing’s for sure, she knows what people are capable of and she's quick to defend herself.

What did you think of care before playing Ava in E20?

Before researching the care system with the E20 team, I didn't know much about it - only that there was a system in place to look after young people who've been in similar situations to Ava.

I assumed it was heavily regulated to assure safety and that it was a fairly healthy environment - helping young people make something of their lives.

What do you think of care now?

I spoke to people on the E20 writers team who have been part of the care system and learnt a lot.

This Series of E20 has looked at the tough side of care - the overwhelming need for stability and structure in their lives, due to the constant changing faces, changing places.

It looks at the side of care that would rather not be spoken of; the lack of guidance, which is so important at a young age, and the overriding overwhelming loss of trust because of these factors.

Of course for many, care is a happy option, one to escape to and an encouraging atmosphere where young people can learn and prosper.

It’s in this place we leave Faith, Ava and Donnie at the end of the series, there can be no promises, but the main feeling is of hope...
