Helping children in care to thrive

Education professionals

Teacher looking at computer with two kidsEducationalists who inspire children in care can make all the difference to their future.

Children in care are still far more likely to leave school with no qualifications than the average population. They are also more likely to change schools often and be excluded.

It doesn't have to be like that. Research shows that children do well in spite of their experiences if they have a trusted adult who believes they can succeed and has high expectations of them.

We provide tools to help you support children in care. Meanwhile new innovations such as virtual headteachers and law which protects a child in care's schooling are helping the system to improve.

CD-romTeachers in the Know

How can you support a child in care to have aspirations and succeed at school? How might their experience in care affect their behaviour at school? Our CD-ROM includes clips of children in the care system and young adults talking about their experiences. It's available free of charge.

Good education

What are the challenges facing children in care in the education system? We explore some of the issues.

Virtual headteachers

A pilot project in eleven local authorities is providing greater support to children in care and the teachers who educate them.
