A group of care leavers worked with professional filmmakers to produce a film which they hoped would tell the truth about life in care.
Filmmakers Cara Lavan and Abi Moore worked with the young people to brainstorm ideas and put together story boards. They taught them how to use the camera and editing skills, and then they shot their film over three days.
The team wanted the film to show both the good and bad sides of growing up in the care system, and to tackle unfair stereotypes about young people in care.
The result was two films, one of which is publicly available. The second film was a ‘making of’ film for the young people to record their learning as they went along. They each got a copy of this film to keep.
Faith, who took part in the filmmaking, said: “I really enjoyed doing this film, when I finished it felt like my views and words had been listened to. It made me feel like I am not alone and I’m not the only one who’s always lonely and feeling down. It really helped me and it got me the support to talk about my feelings. I am so happy!”
