Support for further study

Anyone should be able to afford to study at university if they want to, and there are special measures to make sure young people leaving care do not miss out.  Young people who have been looked after are often eligible for the full amounts on offer, as their carers’ income is not taken into account – which means it doesn’t reduce the level of financial support available.

There are four main types of student finance:

  • Tuition fees
  • Government loans
  • Government grants
  • University help

Your leaving care team should help you with college applications and will often offer additional financial support while you study. The level of support does vary between authorities.  Most will offer a bursary (special extra payment) to help towards accommodation costs, fees and support living expenses. It's important that young people find out what financial package is available to them from their own leaving care team.
