Going to university

Going to university is about more than studying; it's about meeting new people, having fun and finding out about yourself.

If you think university is right for you then go for it! You have as much right as anybody else to a university education.

Which course and university?!

Here are some tips to give you some ideas:

  • Take plenty of time to see what courses are on offer.
  • Discuss your options with your teachers, college tutors, social worker, PA, family members and friends.
  • Look at university propectuses in libraries, online or request them by phone or email.
  • Go to careers fairs for ideas.

What financial support can I get?

There is loads of financial help out there for care leavers wanting to go to unversity - you just need to ask for it!

And don't forget that receiving any extra financial support doesn't mean your local authority shouldn't continue to give you financial, practical and emotional support while you're at university.

What emotional support can I get?

  • Mentoring - most universities offer some sort of mentoring service to students who are having problems. If you feel like you need extra support, whether it be for a short, or long time, contact your university's student services department.
  • Learning Suport - Offered by almost all universities and provides help such as extra tutorials and special arrangements for exams. For more information, contact your individual university.
