Helping children in care to thrive

Get involved in our magazines

Young people working on Who Cares? magazine

Who Cares? magazine is the only UK-wide and independent magazine for young people in care and we want to get as many care-experienced young people involved as possible. From entering the competitions, sending us a poem or sharing their story to taking part in a regional workshop or joining our Editorial Advisory Group - no involvement is too big or too small!

1) Send us ideas for articles or letters from young people:

Is your local authority doing something innovative with the young people you look after? If so let us know and it could be featured in our magazine and read by thousands of children in care accross the UK. Contact our Young Person's Writer Ruth Stivey on 020 7017 2781, or email Ruth.Stivey@thewhocarestrust.org.uk.

If you have a young person that wants to send in a poem, letter or picture, enter one of our competitions or share their story with other young people in care then they can get in touch by:

2) Join our Editorial Advisory Group

We are looking for a small group of care-experienced young people with an interest in journalism to help us make important strategic decisions about the magazine.

We are looking for young people who:

  • Are over 16
  • Have experience of living in care
  • Are thinking about in a career in journalism or the media.

We need them to:

  • Travel to London to meet for four hours, four times a year
  • Critique our magazines and tell us what we could be doing better - including advising us on the design, layout, language and content
  • Take part in editorial/feature discussions to decide future content and input on important strategic decisions.

In return we will:

  • Pay them £25 per session, plus agreed travel costs and lunch
  • Offer a programme of jargon-busting media master classes
  • Offer on-one-one career support from a media professional

For more information please contact our Participation Officer Emma Corbett on 020 7017 8900, or email emma.corbett@thewhocarestrust.org.uk.

3) Book an interactive workshop

Who Cares? could come to you, wherever you are in the country and provide interactive sessions for your young people. The sessions are completely free of charge and we'll even bring refreshments and prizes for the young people who get involved.

The session will be a chance for young people to:

  • Get their views, thoughts and opinions published in a national magazine
  • Compile questions for the magazine's celebrity interviews!
  • Tell us what they like and dislike about the magazine
  • Respond to letters and poems from other young people in care
  • Review books/DVDs/music
  • Give expert advice by answering problems sent in by other young people
  • Work on collating news stories for the magazine
  • Possibly have their own column
  • Have fun!

If you currently subscribe to Who Cares? magazine and know young people with experience of the care system, who want to get their voices heard AND represent other young people in care - please contact our participation officer, Emma Corbett.

What young people say about getting involved in our magazines:

‘I have enjoyed every minute of putting the magazine together. I enjoyed giving advice to young people in care and about how young people’s lives have been affected by the negative images in the media when people give the wrong message about them.’

‘I have enjoyed doing something good for other people. It’s been perfect!’

‘Coz we’re all in care we know what we’re talking about. We know what we’re doing and what we’re saying is right for children in care!’

‘It has given me ideas about how people make magazines. It’s also been really great meeting other people in care, people in different situations.’

‘I like to work on the magazine because it is good fun.’
