What is a graphic designer?

Graphic designers create images mostly using computers.

They can work on loads of different products including websites, magazines, advertising, exhibitions, computer games, TV and film.. The aim is to bring images and products to life.

What sort of tasks would I be doing?

  • Finding out about the project requirements (taking a 'brief')
  • Coming up with design ideas
  • Creating designs
  • Proofreading and preparing designs to be sent to print.

Apart from rough sketches, most graphic design work is now done on computers using specialised software.

What qualifications would I need?

Most graphic designers have a degree or diploma. This could be in graphic design, illustration, fine art or something similar.

Studying for one of these qualifications would also be really useful:

  • The Diploma in creative and media
  • BTEC National Diploma or Certificate
  • An NVQ in something like art or graphic design

If you want to go on to university, you could take a one-year Foundation Diploma in art and design, an Access or pre-entry course before applying for a degree or diploma course. This would enable you to try a variety of art and design subjects whilst you build up a portfolio of work.

If you’d rather start working, think about doing a design apprenticeship in graphic and multimedia design. An apprenticeship would offer you training with an employer and you’d get paid for it.

You could also consider Entry to Employment (e2e) if you’re not quite ready for an Apprenticeship.

Would I suit it?
