What sort of tasks would I be doing?
• Organising catering and accommodation services
• Planning hotel promotions
• Recruiting and training staff
• Greeting guests
• Addressing any problems including complaints
• Carrying out inspections to ensure standards are maintained
A hotel manager’s day can be hugely varied. You could be arranging for flowers to be placed in the lobby one minute and organising staff rotas the next.
What qualifications would I need?
These qualifications are particularly relevant to the hotel industry:
• The Diploma in hospitality
• BTEC Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/HND) Foundation degree, degree or postgraduate qualification in hospitality.
• Courses such as hospitality management, hotel and catering management and hotel, tourism and licensed retail management
If you want to study a course at university but don’t have any qualifications, think about doing an Access course which will enable you to apply to study for a degree afterwards.
Even while your studying for your course, it’s important to get as much practical hotel experience as possible. Try to do some work experience in your holidays or work part time in a hotel.
If you want to get a job straight away it is possible to work your way up without any initial qualifications. Try to get a junior job such as working on reception where you will see first hand what’s involved in running a hotel. Some hotels even offer on the job training to existing employees which will enable you to study whilst working.
If you’re still at school, getting a part time job in catering or retail would give you some great first hand experience and put you in a good position for employment when you finish school.
It’s also worth thinking about doing an Apprenticeship. This would provide you with structured training with an employer and you’ll be paid for it.
If you’re not quite ready for an apprenticeship, think about doing the Entry to Employment (e2e) programme.
