Helping children in care to thrive

Involving young people in Who Cares? magazine

The project provides opportunities for young people to get involved with Who Cares? magazine in two different ways:

Regional workshops

Regional workshops are being held all over the country for children aged 12 to 18 to contribute their thoughts on issues that will be covered in forthcoming editions of the magazine.

Staff from the Who Cares? Trust meet with the groups, which are mostly organised through Children in Care councils, to discuss ideas for the magazine and to hear the thoughts of the young people on those issues.

Some groups of younger children, aged eight to 12, have also been involved with workshops for Who Cares? Junior.

Editorial advisory group

In addition, an editorial advisory group has been set up to advise the magazine and learn journalism skills. This is a group of young people from care, aged 14 and over, who are interested in going into a career in journalism or the media.

Quarterly meetings take place, between issues of the magazine, so the group can take a view on the last issue and make suggestions for the next. They are being taught basic journalism and media skills, and get a chance to write for the magazine.

To find out more about either of these opportunities for young people in care, contact our Participation Officer Emma Corbett.
