When you are looked after there will come a time when you have to leave your foster family or children’s home. You might be going back to live with your family, but if you have been looked after for a long time it’s more likely you’ll be moving into a home of your own. |

You shouldn’t be made to feel that you have to leave care before you are ready. Before any move takes place your IRO should check with you and everyone at your review how ready you are for this move and how well you’ve been prepared. |
When will I stop being looked after? If you are on a care order it will automatically end when you are 18 and this is when you will stop being looked after by the local authority. You might leave your placement to live in your own place before that, if you feel ready when you are 16 or 17 and if your IRO and social worker are happy that you are ready. The local authority is still responsible for looking after you and finding you somewhere to live until you are 18.
