Helping children in care to thrive

Our resources for foster carers

Foster carers play a crucial role in the lives of many children in care. The work that you do can be challenging but it makes all the difference to a young person's life to have someone who cares about and supports them. To do this, you need help and support.

The Who Cares? Trust produces a wide range of support materials to help you, and the young people that you care for, many of which are free to use.

Please do contact us if you have any questions about the resources on this page.

Education guide for foster carers

Foster carers' guide front cover

We have recently published a new 'everything you need to know' guide to help foster carers support looked-after children to get the most out of their education.

It covers a wide range of important topics, including:

  • How the school system works - things like key stages and exams.
  • The support system available to help with looked-after children's education.
  • The support you can give a child as a foster carer.
  • The support available for children with behavioural problems and special educational needs.
  • Appealing against decisions and making complaints.

Choice Matters - interactive resource for foster carers

Choice Matters boxChoice Matters is a new interactive DVD-rom (designed to be played on a computer with sound) that enables you to give your fostered child the best start in life by supporting them to make informed choices.

Own Two Feet - the blog for young people in care

Own Two Feet is our new blog for children and young people in care which follows the thoughts of John, an inspirational care leaver.

Own Two Feet homepageJohn was in and out of care for most of his childhood. He didn't have the best time; he got in trouble and was moved around an awful lot. But he has come out fighting and wants to inspire other young people to do the same.

Being in care can be isolating, and can make young people feel like they are different from their friends. We want young people in care to know that they are not alone. This blog, which we hope will become a regular read for many young people in care, will help to create a supportive community of young people in and from care. Visit the blog...

It's also a hub for entertainment, support and advice; the site features lots of true stories about young people with care experience, creating a strong sense of community and inclusion. Who Cares?
