Helping children in care to thrive

Our skills and expertise

  • We have a wealth of expertise and knowledge about the care system, the wishes and needs of looked-after young people, as well as the priorities, challenges and constraints for local authorities and other providers attempting to provide the best quality of care and outcomes they can.
  • Across our staff we can offer particular expertise in communicating with and consulting young people in care across all age ranges, leaving care, participation programmes with young people in care (including so called ‘hard to engage’ young people) and an in-depth understanding of the policy and delivery context for local authorities.  Members of our staff have previously worked in a range of relevant organisations - including the National Care Advisory Service, A National Voice, the Care Leavers’ Association, The Prince’s Trust and ChildLine – as well as in social work and children’s services policy development. Currently one-third of our staff is care-experienced.
  • We have a group of young people in care who help us to develop training tools and deliver training for groups of practitioners and carers who want to gain an insight into what it feels like ‘from the other side’ and how young people think the care system could work better.
  • We have an exceptional reach to young people through our magazines Who Cares? and Who Cares? Junior and our website, which has a very popular section specially designed for young people in care.
