What sort of tasks would I be doing?
- Developing health and fitness plans for customers
- Showing customers how to use gym equipment
- Giving customers information and advice on healthy eating and lifestyle
- Measuring blood pressure, heart recovery rate and body fat ratios for customers
- Devising routines for exercise classes
What qualifications would I need?
You don’t need any specific qualifications to start working as an assistant instructor which you can do from the age of 16. However to be able to work unsupervised you need to be over 18 and have public liability insurance and to be recognised by REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals).
To be placed on the Register, fitness instructors need an approved national qualification, such as an NVQ or a related vocational qualification at Level 2 or above, and must hold current insurance. You could study for this whilst working as an assistant instructor.
You could also consider doing an apprenticeship in something like fitness instructing or sports management. This would give you structured training whilst your working. If you’re not quite ready to do an apprenticeship you could thinking about doing Entry to Employment (e2e).
Would I suit it?
Do you...
- enjoy sport and eating healthily?
- like working with lots of different people?
- enjoy motivating people to do their best?
- like thinking of new ideas for exercise sessions?
- know a bit about first aid and health and safety?
If so, then you'd make a great health and fitness instructor!
