What sort of tasks would I be doing?
- Writing up assessments
- Talking to people to find out more about their situations
- Offering and organising support
- Taking part in meetings with other teams such as child protection to decide about the best course of action for people you are working with.
As a social worker you might spend your time helping young people and their families.
However you may also work with the following:
- Older people
- people with mental health conditions, physical or learning difficulties
- homeless people, refugees and asylum seekers
- those affected by drugs or alcohol
- people who have committed or been affected by crime.
What qualifications would I need?
Social work has become a graduate profession so you will need either a degree or postgraduate degree in social work approved by the General Social Care Council (GSCC).
You may be eligible for an NHS bursary to help with course fees. Have a look at the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) website for further details.
Think about doing the diploma in social work (DipSW) which is recognised as a valid social work qualification and will give you a good introduction into social work.
It’s also really useful to do some work experience before applying to start your course, as it can give you an idea of what the role is like, and lit ooks great on your CV. Have a look at your local community care centre to see if anything is available.
It’s also worth contacting Community Service Volunteers (CSV) which can help you to find opportunities for work experience.
Would it suit me?
Are you...
- Patient and able to stay calm under pressure?
- Able to face difficult situations?
- Able to develop trusting relationships with people you are working with?
- Aware of the differences that come with gender, race, age, sexuality, culture and religion?
You should also have a genuine interest in people’s well-being and have the desire to improve the quality of their lives. A social worker needs to be committed to helping people.
Career Prospects
Salaries vary depending on areas and positions but a qualified social worker can earn a good salary and enjoy a clear career structure.
With lots of experience, you could specialise in a certain area such as child protection or move into other work such as counselling, therapy, education and training. You could even think about becoming self-employed or working abroad.
