Helping children in care to thrive

Staying in touch with siblings

One of the things children in care mention most often is a wish to stay in touch with appropriate members of their family and friends.  For children with large sibling groups this can sometimes be very difficult.  Sometimes one or more children from a family are adopted while others are not; sometimes children are separated geographically.  Most foster carers don't have room in their homes for large sibling groups.  Consequently, a child's legal right to stay in touch with siblings can get overlooked.

Perhaps everyone with a sibling will at some time pick over the motives and choices of their parents.  For people who've gone through care that shared perspective and support can be particularly important.

Delma Hughes of Siblings Together explained to us how the bond can get broken, and describes her initiative to try and fix it.

Aaron, who left care more recently, tells us how he and his twin ended up living at opposite ends of the country.
