Date of birth? Pink ink splat

August 24, 1957

What are you most famous for?

Golly… I suppose Blackadder, QI, Jeeves & Wooster, A Bit of Fry & Laurie… Wilde, some films, radio, writing and so forth.

What would you like to be most famous for?

My dress sense? No. Writing, I suppose.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

So many. Agatha Christie novels. Mayonnaise.

What’s your most embarrassing moment?

It was a dream, but involved nudity and a cathedral service.

Do you know anything about children in care?

Not nearly as much as I should, I think.

What do people most often get wrong about Stephen Fry?

People think I’m an intellectual who will be bored by people who aren’t clever. I try not to judge them at all, but if I do it’s by their character, kindness, consideration, charm – the things that matter.

You talk openly about being gay and having mental health problems, you’ve spent time in prison and yet you are seen by many as a ‘national treasure’. What advice can you offer?!

“Self belief, but never self-pity”. The greatest mistake is to look inwards. The more one can look outwards at the world – be curious about other people – the happier one’s life will be. Life is often very cruel but selfpity only makes it worse: because it has nothing to feed on but bitterness, grief and resentment. Misery and depression are very real however and never be afraid to ask for help if you feel that your moods are beyond your own control. But refuse to be a victim.

Who is your greatest friend and why?

My greatest friend is Hugh Laurie. We met at university and instantly started writing comedy together. To this day
he makes me laugh, is wise and kind to me and makes life better, as friends should.

What’s next for Stephen Fry?

I'm making a documentary on Richard Wagner for the BBC in a couple of weeks. Just as soon as we’ve recorded the last five QI programmes of the season.

What’s your favourite:

Film

Coo, that’s hard. Godfather Part 2 at the moment. I’d probably say something different tomorrow.

TV Programme

Crumbs. Even harder. Current? I don’t really watch much television to be honest. There’s nothing I record.

Band/Musician

I’m loving Bat For Lashes at the moment…

Tell us one thing you’ve never before revealed in an interview…

My second toe is longer than my so-called “big toe” – weird, huh?
