Web designer

What is a web designer?

Web designers design and build websites. They develop and maintain the way a website works and looks, making sure it looks attractive and the information is clear.

What sort of tasks would I be doing?

  • Meeting with clients to discuss designs and who the website is for
  • Producing different designs for websites that include text, images, logos and sound
  • Writing web pages – for this you would be using codes such as HTML, XHTML, CSS, Javascript, Actionscript, ColdFusion, .Net and Flash. You can also create codes using programs like Dreamweaver and Visual Studio
  • Making sure a website is fully functional in different browsers and at different resolutions.

What qualifications would I need?

It would be really useful to study IT and if you can, do a course in web development or design. Why not think about doing one of the following:

  • The Diploma in information technology
  • The Diploma in creative and media
  • A level ICT
  • BTEC Awards, Certificates and Diplomas in art and design or media production
  • BTEC HNC/HND or foundation degree in media or computing subjects
  • A degree in design, web development, web design, multimedia design or web content management.

Or how about considering an Apprenticeship? With an apprenticeship you would get structured training with an employer, get paid and have time to study.

Work experience is also really useful, giving you first hand experience of what it’s like working with other web designers and what the role involves.

Have a look in your local area and in your local paper to see if any work experience is available. If you can’t find anything, try writing to some companies you would like to work for saying you are really interested in becoming a web designer and would like to do some work experience. You never know, they might have something for you.

Would it suit me?

Do you...

  • Enjoy learning about the web, design and computers?
  • Enjoy learning about new techniques?
  • Feel able to work with lots of different people?
  • Feel confident to communicate your ideas clearly?

If so, being a web designer might really suit you!

The important thing to have for this job is a mix of computer expertise and creativity.
