Helping children in care to thrive

Who cares about science

Child with scientist at Centre of the Cell, LondonProject aim:

To engage or re-engage young people in care with science and learning in a fun way.

Outline:

Interactive workshops

In August 2011 we delivered an interactive science workshop, with up to twenty young people from care aged between 6-16. At the session young people were accompanied by their carer or social worker, at the Centre of the Cell based at Queen Mary University, London.

The workshop helped young people to think more broadly and creatively about science and to understand all the different possibilities of a career in a scientific area. By involving foster carers, social workers and residential workers will helped empower those adults (who have parental responsibility) to support young people in their learning, which has been shown to have a significant impact on their attainment.

Who Cares? magazine

We used some of the material developed through the workshops and in collaboration with Centre of the Cell to produce a special science edition of Who Cares? magazine. Who Cares? magazine reaches around 20,000 looked-after children each year and is the only magazine for young people in care. It offers a voice and a creative outlet for children in care as well as providing support and information on issues that directly affect their lives. The special science edition increased the impact of the project and the project’s ability to inspire other looked-after children around the country.

Centre of The Cell, Queen Mary University

A unique, interactive multimedia experience embedded within a working medical research laboratory; the concept, content, interactivities and website have been extensively researched in evaluation with over 6000 local young people, their teachers and carers. Centre of the Cell is currently the only dedicated resource aimed at young people and their teachers or carers to help them learn and teach about cells and scientific research.
