Who gets eating disorders?

Lots of people think eating disorders only affect teenage girls. But about a quarter of people who have an eating disorder at school age are boys. Eating disorders can also develop in middle age.

Anorexia usually develops around the age of 16 or 17 and is more common in girls than boys. One in 250 women and 1 in 2,000 men will experience anorexia at some point.

Bulimia is five times more common but 90% of those who develop it are female. The condition usually develops around the age of 18 or 19.

Binge eating affects males and females equally and usually develops later in life, between the ages of 30 and 40.

It’s especially important for young people from a care background to make sure they are OK and not struggling, cos developing these conditions can happen when you’re unsettled.

If you feel bad about how you look, try and pick out good things about your body and focus on them instead!
