The proper name for being in care is being looked after because that is what it should feel like.
Whatever you call it, the point is that you matter. You deserve to have a good childhood and to be safe and cared for. Some young people who become looked after are sad not to be living with their own family any more. Others feel relieved to be away from home, but may still be worried about what being looked after will be like. Looked after children often say that it helps if you can understand more about what is happening to you and why, and what you can expect from being looked after. That’s why this guide has been produced - to give you the most up-to-date information on what life for a looked after young person should be like. You may feel really lonely and as if there's no one who understands or who you can talk to. But you're not alone, there are lots of young people going through the same thing who understand how you feel, and there are lots of people who want to help you with any questions or worries you have. It’s really important to remember that you did not become a looked after child because of anything you have done – it’s not your fault. You are being looked after because it is the best and safest thing for you at the moment. We hope this guide helps you!
