In most cases, your social worker will try to get you back home with your family as soon as they can.
They know that this is the best place for you when it is a safe and loving home. Sometimes, however, a lot of changes need to happen at home before it’s ok for you to go back.
If you became looked after because your parents weren’t looking after you well enough, your parents need to understand and admit what went wrong. If they can show that they have changed and will do a much better job of looking after you in the future, there’s a better chance that people will think it’s ok for you to return to live at home.
Sometimes you may find it hard to understand why you can’t go home. It’s important to remember that social workers want to keep you safe and make sure that you are properly cared for. There are many young people going through the same thing as you. Many of these go home very quickly, some take longer and some stay looked after for a long time, perhaps all their childhood.
Although it can seem unfair not to be allowed to live at home, remember that it is not your fault and that you deserve a safe and happy childhood.
