Helping children in care to thrive

Word Power

Project aim:

This project aims to help young people in care tap into the therapeutic value of creative writing, using it as a powerful vehicle to express and process thoughts and emotions, as well as gaining the benefit of sharing experiences with others.

Outline:

Word Power is an ongoing creative writing project that is being run with looked after young people, working with published poet Lemn Sissay. The project is being run in two phases: phase one was completed in Essex in April 2011, and phase two will run in 2012/13.

Alongside this, the autumn 2011 edition of Who Cares? magazine had a literacy focus, and the ‘central library’ in Who Cares? Town has now been opened.

Partners:

The project is run in partnership with First Story, an organisation which provides published authors to work with deprived schools on creative writing projects.
