Helping children in care to thrive

02/2011 - Young people take over Who Cares? magazine

Young people in and from care have taken over the latest issue of Who Cares? magazine as part of a project run by The Who Cares? Trust.

From writing the editor’s letter, sharing their care experiences and directing the cartoon to answering the letters and interviewing the celebrity; the young people were involved in every stage of the magazine’s production. The issue is all about telling the truth about life in care – the good bits and the bad.

Aicha, one of the young people involved in the project, commented: ‘I’ve loved every minute of it! I enjoyed speaking about how young people are affected by negative images of care in the media. I want to tell the world what being in care is really like.’

Thirteen young people in and from care volunteered their time to work on the magazine as part of The Who Cares? Trust’s ‘Don’t write us off’ project, supported by the volunteering charity V.

Notes

1)    Issue 94 of Who Cares? magazine will be published at the end of February 2011. For sample copies please contact Jemma Roche: jemma.roche@thewhocarestrust.org.uk
2)    Who Cares? magazine was set up by Tory Laughland, a Westminster social worker, together with a small group of social work colleagues in 1985. This first issue was distributed only in the London Borough of Westminster, but proved so popular that after nine issues Tory established The Who Cares? Trust as a charity which then joined forces with the National Children's Bureau (NCB) and the National Association of Young People in Care (NAYPIC) to launch Who Cares? as a UK-wide magazine for children and young people in care in 1987.
