Your first day

It's here - your first day! Bet that came around quick didn't it? It's normal to feel nervous on your first day. Just remember that everyone's been there and you've been hired for a reason - they want you there!

Your first day at your new job has arrived - let's make it a good one!

1. Treat this first day as you would your interview – first impressions do count. Be polite and do your best.

2. Smile and be friendly, maybe offer to make a round of tea for everyone.

3. If you don’t understand something, ask! You won’t be expected to know everything and it takes everyone time to learn the ropes. Try having a notebook with you so you can jot down how to do things so you don’t have to ask again. You can then look back at it as many times as you need to.

4. Make your work space feel comfortable to you. You’ll find it much easier to work if you feel happy in your space.

5. When it’s lunchtime, try not to eat your lunch at your desk. Lunchtime can be a good time to meet some of your colleagues. If there’s a cafeteria or communal area, go in there and try to meet some people. Don’t worry if you don’t make any great friends in the first few days, it will take time to get to know your new work colleagues. But keep trying, finding people that you get on with at work will make you feel a lot more at home.

6. See if there’s a mentoring scheme available at work. A mentor is someone at work who shares their knowledge and experience with you to help you feel comfortable at work and progress in your career. You can ask them for advice when you feel a bit lost and you’re not sure who else to ask.

7. Don’t judge the job by your first day. Expect those first days to be a bit intimidating and overwhelming. If you’re finding it tough, don’t worry, most people do when they first start work. Give yourself time to settle in; don’t expect to feel at home right away. And don’t give up – you’ve earned this job so take pride in it!
