Foster carers play a crucial role in the lives of many children in care. The work can be challenging but it makes all the difference to a young person's life to have someone who cares about and supports them. To do this, foster carers need help and support.
Choice Matters is a new interactive DVD-rom (designed to be played on a computer with sound) that enables foster carers to give their fostered child the best start in life by supporting them to make informed choices. An essential resource for both new and experienced foster carers, it has been designed not only to introduce carers to the important issues that young people will face, but also as a practical advice tool to help when a carer faced with a specific problem.
“As we went through each section, I asked the girls to point out which statement from the DVD they felt most applied to them. This proved very interesting. I am sure it was easier for them to point these out rather than vocalising their feelings and difficulties without any guidelines. Produced in collaboration with foster carers, this resource is bright, engaging and accessible. It is framed around five key areas: being healthy, staying safe, enjoying life and achieving, making a positive contribution and achieving economic well-being. Within each of these sections you will find comprehensive information and advice alongside inspirational footage of young people and foster carers discussing their own experiences.
